Artist: Richard Haas, Brooklyn, New York
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Richard Haas is recognized as one of the great architectural muralists of our time. A master of trompe-l'oeil, his strikingly illusionistic murals can be seen on the exterior and interior of buildings throughout major American cities. In addition to his many private and public commissions and exhibits, Mr. Haas has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and has been awarded the Medal of Honor by the American Institute of Architects.

Location: Landmark Square, 111 West Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach, CA

Description: The Historical beachfront amusement park known as The Pike, with its walk of a Thousand Lights, is the focal point of this five panel mural representing the major aspects of economic development in Long Beach. Among the subjects depicted are aircraft manufacturing, The Port of Long Beach, the oil industry and public rail transportation.

Developer: Cushman Investment and Development Corporation, Long Beach, CA

Artist Consultant: Tamara Thomas Fine Arts Services, Los Angeles, CC

Funding: Commision $20,000. The Landmark Square development project was underway before the Percent for Public Art Program was adopted by the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency. The developer voluntarily agreed to participate in the program, and allocated one percent of the total development cost toward on site Public Art and other cultural contributions.

Completion: November 8, 2002
