Smithsonian Week in Long Beach Aside from being a city alive with arts and cultural organizations, Long Beach can also boast being the only city nationwide affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, our country’s first museum. As a Smithsonian affiliate the Arts Council invites Smithsonian scholars every March to visit our city and participate in a week of events and activities designed around an educational and cultural theme to support the interests of Long Beach residents. During Smithsonian Week, scholars visit schools to give assemblies and lectures to students from elementary to university level. Smithsonian Week scholars introduce new perspectives on artistic and cultural concepts, providing an opportunity for educators to extend classroom learning. Beyond school-site visits, Smithsonian Week additionally provides community programming, activities and an annual gala to create educational and cultural awareness for all Long Beach residents.
